Hope on Welfare Avenue: How AdaptaKind volunteers helped feed Montreal

As digital transformation experts, we believe in the power of technology to drive change—but we also know that sometimes, change begins with something as simple as a helping hand and a warm meal.
We're proud to spotlight the incredible work of two of our interns, Bryan and Joseph, who recently fundraised and organised a volunteering event to bring warmth and nourishment to Montreal's most vulnerable residents. As Montreal locals, Bryan and Joseph witness the hardship faced by many in their city, often exacerbated by the extreme cold and snow that every Canadian winter brings. Alongside the 'standard' elements of their internship, learning to work with Jira, Groovy, and ScriptRunner, they were set a challenge by their mentor, JT Vinet: to go above and beyond by organising a charity event through AdaptaKind. And so, driven by a desire to help in their neighbourhoods and inspire others to do the same, they set about planning fundraising and a collaborative event with a local charity, Welfare Avenue.
Everything came together on 6 December 2024, when a group of 15 volunteers—including other team members from The Adaptavist Group and Welfare Avenue—gathered to prepare and distribute nutritious meals to those in need. During the four-hour event, over 250 home-cooked meals were served to marginalised communities throughout downtown Montreal, with food and funds left over for further important work by the charity. The event, aptly named 'Hope on Welfare Avenue', was a shining example of our AdaptaKind programme in action. It demonstrated how workplace fundraising and volunteering can create ripple effects of positivity, touching not only those we serve but also strengthening bonds and expanding skills within our team.
Gaining valuable experience
Our interns faced their fair share of hurdles in bringing this event to life. From sourcing ingredients to coordinating volunteers and planning fundraising efforts, every step presented challenges to navigate. But true to the spirit of The Adaptavist Group, they tackled these obstacles head-on, demonstrating remarkable problem-solving, pragmatism, and teamwork.
Reflecting on the event, Bryan and Joseph noted that early planning, clear communication, and a willingness to divide and conquer tasks were the key factors for success. In addition to helping the charity and its beneficiaries, this experience also provided invaluable lessons in project management and leadership—skills that will serve our interns well in their future careers. It's exactly why we're so passionate about getting everyone involved with our AdaptaKind initiative, on top of the obvious community benefits.
More than just meals
The impact of the Hope on Welfare Avenue event was immediate and tangible. Local shelters and beneficiaries expressed heartfelt gratitude for the support, while our volunteers reported a profound sense of fulfilment.
Beyond the event itself, the interns' work also provided surplus food donations and, impressively, raised over $1,400. This was enough to cover all the costs and supplies on the day and provide an additional boost that will support Welfare Avenue's vital work in the months ahead. It also laid the groundwork for future collaborations, highlighting the potential for ongoing partnerships to create lasting change in our communities.
Perhaps most importantly, the event fostered a sense of camaraderie and purpose among our team. Participants spoke of the joy they felt in uniting for a common cause, and how the experience strengthened their connection to both their teammates and the wider Montreal community.
The ripple effect
The success of Hope on Welfare Avenue underscores the importance of programmes like AdaptaKind. By empowering our employees—especially our youngest team members—to make a difference, we're not just building a better company; we're contributing to a better world. This event serves as a powerful reminder of the positive impact businesses can have when they prioritise giving back. It's not just about ticking a box or fulfilling an obligation; it's about creating meaningful change and inspiring others to do the same.
The overwhelmingly positive feedback from all involved in this event has reinforced our commitment to maintaining community engagement and exploring new ways to support those in need. By combining our resources and expertise, we believe we can create lasting positive change in the communities where we work and live.
Leading by example
To all who contributed to this event—volunteers, donors, and partners—we extend our gratitude. Your generosity and commitment embody the very best of The Adaptavist Group's values. Particular thanks go to Gabriela, Steel, and the whole Welfare Avenue team. And to our interns, Bryan and Joseph, whose hard work made this possible: you've set an example for us all. We can't wait to see what you'll achieve next!
As efforts like this show us, we can all be part of the change we want to see. We encourage everyone across The Adaptavist Group—and indeed, the wider tech community—to consider how you can make a difference. Whether it's through volunteering, fundraising, or simply spreading awareness, every action counts. Together, we can create a future where technology and compassion go hand in hand, transforming lives and communities one step at a time.
